Cryptocoryne affinis
Also known as: Green Affinis Crypt, Affinis Crypt
Origin: Malaysia, Thai Peninsula
Cryptocoryne affinis is native to the Malaysian Peninsula and the Thai-Malay border region, where it grows in shaded streams and forest rivers. In the aquarium it forms an attractive rosette of long, oval to lance-shaped leaves that range from deep olive-green to bronze depending on light intensity. It is among the most durable and undemanding of all Cryptocoryne species, tolerating hard and soft water, low light, and infrequent fertilisation. Like most Crypts it may experience 'crypt melt' when first introduced, but quickly rebounds with vigorous new growth.
Light: Low to medium; tolerates very low light with reduced growth. CO2: Not required; responds positively to supplementation with larger leaves. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs every 3–4 months. Planting: Leave crown above substrate; space 10–15 cm apart for spreading clumps. Growth: Slow; expect crypt melt on introduction — new growth emerges within 2–4 weeks.
