Cryptocoryne bullosa
Also known as: Bullous Crypt, Borneo Blistered Crypt
Origin: Borneo (Sarawak)
Cryptocoryne bullosa comes from the shaded, peat-stained rivers of Sarawak, Borneo, where it grows submerged in soft, acidic blackwater. Its common name refers to its remarkably inflated, blister-like leaf surface texture (bulla = blister in Latin) which gives the plant a uniquely tactile, sculptural appearance. It is a slow grower that prefers stable, mature aquarium conditions and soft, slightly acidic water, and rewards patient aquarists with one of the most remarkable leaf textures in the entire plant kingdom.
Light: Low; sensitive to intense light — use floating plants as shade if needed. CO2: Beneficial; aids establishment and steady growth in soft water. Substrate: Fine, soft, nutrient-rich substrate; root tabs supplement well. Planting: Handle rhizome gently; expose crown; avoid disturbing once settled. Growth: Very slow; allow 4–6 weeks for establishment after purchase before judging health.
