Cryptocoryne cognata
Also known as: South Indian Crypt, Cognata Crypt
Origin: Southern India (Western Ghats)
Cryptocoryne cognata is a rarely cultivated species from the Western Ghats of southern India. It produces medium to large, broadly oval leaves with a subtly bullate surface in deep, rich green. The plant grows at a moderate pace and appreciates stable water conditions similar to its native soft, acidic forest streams. In the aquarium it performs best in a shaded midground position, where its broad leaves can develop fully without being scorched by intense lighting. Its relative scarcity in cultivation makes it a rewarding find for collectors of Indian Cryptocoryne species. An undemanding but slow plant for the patient aquascaper.
Light: Low to moderate; shade-tolerant; avoid prolonged intense illumination. CO2: Not required; grows without CO2 but responds well to supplementation. Fertilisation: Root tabs in the substrate provide a valuable nutrient base. Placement: Midground; pairs well with other shaded plants like Anubias and ferns. Propagation: Produces rhizome offsets; remove daughter plants once established.
