Cryptocoryne crispatula
Also known as: Thai Crypt, Crispate Crypt
Origin: Asia
Cryptocoryne crispatula is one of the largest and fastest-growing Cryptocoryne species, native to rivers in Thailand and mainland Southeast Asia. Its long, narrow, strongly corrugated or ruffled leaves can reach 60 cm in tall tanks, creating flowing background columns. Despite its impressive size, it is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and does not demand CO2 injection, making it a rewarding species for planted tanks with space. Several varieties exist, including the popular var. balansae (now treated separately). It spreads freely once established.
Light: Medium (30–50 PAR); grows large under standard aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; grows well without injection. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 3 months; liquid fertiliser weekly to sustain rapid growth. Planting: Background plant in larger tanks; plant singly or in rows with 8–10 cm spacing; keep crown exposed. Growth: Fast for a Crypt — can reach 30–60 cm; spreads via runners; remove older outer leaves periodically.
