Cryptocoryne elliptica
Also known as: Elliptic Crypt, Elliptica Crypt
Origin: Malaysia (Malay Peninsula)
Cryptocoryne elliptica is native to the shaded streams of the Malaysian Peninsula, where it grows submerged in clear, soft to moderately hard water. Its broadly elliptic, glossy leaves distinguish it from most other Malaysian Crypts and the contrasting reddish-brown underside adds a beautiful two-tone effect when leaves catch the light. It is moderately challenging, preferring stable, mature aquarium conditions with good substrate nutrition and soft-to-neutral water chemistry.
Light: Low; sensitive to bright light — shade from intense overhead illumination. CO2: Beneficial; supports steady growth and maintains leaf gloss. Substrate: Fine, nutrient-rich substrate; root tabs every 3–4 months. Planting: Expose crown; space 10–15 cm apart; use as a collector's midground specimen. Growth: Very slow; allow 4–6 weeks for full establishment before expecting new leaves.
