Cryptocoryne fusca
Also known as: Dark-brown Crypt, Black Crypt, Fusca Crypt
Origin: Borneo
Cryptocoryne fusca is a Bornean species whose very name (fusca = dark/brown in Latin) alludes to its remarkably dark leaf pigmentation, which ranges from chocolate brown to near-black depending on conditions. The leaves are lance-shaped to oval with a finely corrugated surface and a subtle sheen. It originates from soft, acidic blackwater streams and performs best in mature, established aquariums that replicate these conditions. Its deeply pigmented foliage provides a dramatic contrast to bright green plants in the aquascape.
Light: Low; darkest colouration achieved under dim, warm-spectrum light. CO2: Beneficial; supports establishment and maintains leaf integrity. Substrate: Soft, peat-enriched substrate; root tabs for sustained nutrition. Planting: Handle with care; expose crown; avoid disturbing roots once planted. Growth: Very slow; plan for 6–8 weeks before new leaf emergence after planting.
