Cryptocoryne lingua
Also known as: Tongue Crypt, Lingua Crypt
Origin: Asia
Cryptocoryne lingua is an unusual and rarely seen species from Borneo, notable for producing small, spoon-shaped or tongue-shaped leaves that grow nearly flat along the substrate on long, slender petioles. It is one of the most morphologically distinct Crypts, growing in brackish to freshwater habitats along the Bornean coast. In the aquarium it forms curious, low, spreading colonies under low light, making it a conversation piece for dedicated Crypt enthusiasts. It is slow-growing and benefits from a fine, nutrient-rich substrate.
Light: Low (10–25 PAR); prefers shaded conditions mimicking its forest-floor riverbank habitat. CO2: Not required; grows slowly without injection. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 4–6 months; very light liquid fertilisation; avoid over-fertilising. Planting: Foreground; plant singly or in small groups 3–4 cm apart; tolerates slightly brackish water. Growth: Very slow; stays under 10 cm; spreads minimally via runners over time.
