Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia
Also known as: Pontederia-leaf Crypt, Broad-leaf Sumatran Crypt
Origin: Asia
Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia is native to Sumatra and stands apart from many Cryptocoryne species by virtue of its distinctly broad, ovate leaves rather than the typical narrow lance-shape. The leaf surface is velvety-green above and flushed pinkish-red beneath, a colour combination that creates beautiful contrast in midground plantings. It grows to a moderate size of 15–25 cm and prefers soft, slightly acidic water with good root nutrition. It is a moderately demanding species that rewards careful attention to substrate fertility.
Light: Low to medium (20–40 PAR); the bold leaves are attractive even under minimal lighting. CO2: Not required; injection may improve leaf size and underside colour intensity. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 3–4 months; regular liquid fertiliser with iron and trace minerals. Planting: Midground; plant singly or in small groups; expose crown; soft substrate preferred. Growth: Slow; reaches 15–25 cm; spreads gradually; minimal trimming needed.
