Cryptocoryne purpurea
Also known as: Purple Crypt, Purpurea Crypt
Origin: Malaysia (Selangor, Perak)
Cryptocoryne purpurea is native to the rivers of peninsular Malaysia, particularly the states of Selangor and Perak, where it grows in shaded streams with soft to moderately hard water. Its common name refers to the prominent purple-brown pigmentation on the undersides of its leaves, which creates a striking two-tone effect that is especially visible when leaves gently sway in water current. It is moderately demanding but rewards consistent care and stable water conditions with beautiful, healthy growth.
Light: Low to medium; underside purple colouration intensifies under medium light. CO2: Beneficial; promotes larger leaves and richer purple pigmentation. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate with root tabs every 3 months. Planting: Expose crown; use as a midground specimen to showcase the two-tone leaf colouring. Growth: Slow; may experience crypt melt on introduction — normal and temporary.
