Cryptocoryne purpurea var. purpurea
Also known as: Purple Crypt, Malaysian Purple Crypt
Origin: Peninsular Malaysia
Cryptocoryne purpurea var. purpurea is one of the most dramatically pigmented Cryptocoryne species available to hobbyists. Endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, it produces broad, heavily bullate leaves suffused with deep purple-red tones that intensify under adequate lighting and iron supplementation. The leaf surface has a rich, embossed texture that catches and reflects light beautifully. Growing to a medium size, it is well suited to the midground of planted aquariums. Like most Malaysian Cryptocoryne, it prefers soft to moderately hard water and stable conditions. A striking and rewarding addition to any planted tank with an eye for dramatic colour.
Light: Moderate; stronger light deepens purple pigmentation — avoid very low light. CO2: Optional; CO2 injection promotes more vigorous growth and richer colouration. Fertilisation: Iron-rich fertilisation essential for purple colour development; root tabs required. Placement: Midground; allow space for broad leaf development; pairs with green plants. Propagation: Runners from rhizome; divide once daughter plants have developed roots.
