Cryptocoryne pygmaea
Also known as: Pygmy Crypt, Philippine Dwarf Crypt
Origin: Philippines
Cryptocoryne pygmaea is among the tiniest species in the entire Cryptocoryne genus, native to the Philippines. It produces very small, narrow, lance-shaped leaves in light to medium green, rarely exceeding 8 cm in height. This miniature stature makes it highly prized for nano aquariums and as a foreground accent in larger scapes where fine-textured, low-growing plants are needed. Despite its small size, it is not especially fragile and adapts to a range of soft water conditions. It grows slowly but spreads by runners to form a delicate carpet-like colony over time. A charming specialist plant for those who appreciate diminutive aquatic species.
Light: Low to moderate; very compact — avoid intense light that may cause algae in small tanks. CO2: Not required; adequate nutrition and stable conditions are more important than CO2. Fertilisation: Light liquid feeding; root tabs in substrate provide a stable nutrient base. Placement: Foreground; ideal in nano tanks or as a delicate accent in larger aquariums. Propagation: Thin stolons; separate daughter plantlets once they have rooted properly.
