Cryptocoryne retrospiralis
Also known as: Spiral Crypt, Indian Crypt
Origin: Asia
Cryptocoryne retrospiralis is one of the taller, more slender Cryptocoryne species, with linear leaves up to 40 cm long that show a distinctive subtle spiral twist along their length. Native to river margins in India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, it grows in both deep and shallow water, giving it broad adaptability. In the aquarium it creates a flowing, naturalistic background or midground curtain. It is one of the easier large Crypts to keep, tolerating a wide range of water parameters, and spreads slowly but steadily.
Light: Low to medium (15–40 PAR); one of the most shade-tolerant larger Crypt species. CO2: Not required; grows without injection in most conditions. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 4 months; liquid fertiliser monthly to maintain leaf health. Planting: Midground to background; plant in rows or clusters 5 cm apart; keep crown above the substrate. Growth: Moderate; reaches 20–40 cm; spreads via runners; remove older leaves at the base as needed.
