Cryptocoryne sabahensis
Also known as: Sabah Crypt, Bornean Reddish Crypt
Origin: Sabah, Borneo
Cryptocoryne sabahensis is native to the rivers and streams of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, a region known for its exceptional biodiversity. In the aquarium, it produces elongated, dark green leaves with subtle reddish-brown tones across the blade, giving it a warm, earthy appearance. Like other Bornean Cryptocoryne, it appreciates soft, slightly acidic water and minimal disturbance once established. Growth is slow but steady, and the plant proves long-lived with proper care. Its limited availability in cultivation reflects its restricted wild range and relatively recent introduction to the hobby rather than any particular difficulty of culture.
Light: Low to moderate; shade conditions matching its Bornean rainforest stream origin. CO2: Not required; consistent water parameters are more important than CO2 supplementation. Fertilisation: Root tabs and light liquid fertilisation on a regular schedule. Placement: Midground in a dedicated crypt or Borneo biotope aquarium. Propagation: Slow runners; separate with care only once daughter plants are firmly established.
