Cryptocoryne spiralis
Also known as: Spiral Crypt, Indian Crypt, Spiralis Crypt
Origin: India
Cryptocoryne spiralis is widespread across the rivers and wetlands of India, where it is one of the most common aquatic plants found in the subcontinent. Its leaves are notably long and narrow with a characteristic spiralling twist along their length, giving the plant a graceful, animated appearance in flowing water. It is highly adaptable, tolerating a wide range of water chemistry from soft to moderately hard, and is among the easier Indian Crypts to cultivate successfully.
Light: Low to medium; one of the most adaptable Crypts for varied lighting. CO2: Not required; grows well without injection under moderate light. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs; tolerates gravel with regular fertilisation. Planting: Expose crown; plant in groups of 3–5 to create a natural, twisting mid-background effect. Growth: Slow to moderate; spreads via runners — divide periodically to maintain shape.
