Cryptocoryne usteriana
Also known as: Philippine Crypt, Large Philippine Crypt
Origin: Asia
Cryptocoryne usteriana comes from the Philippines and is among the largest Cryptocoryne species known, with broad, bullate, dark-green leaves that can reach 60 cm long in optimal conditions. The leaf surface is strongly ruffled and textured, giving each leaf a hammered, sculptural quality. Despite its impressive size, it grows slowly and is tolerant of low light and a wide range of water conditions, making it suitable for low-tech planted tanks in large aquariums. It requires patience — months may pass before it settles and begins producing new leaves.
Light: Low to medium (15–40 PAR); tolerates deep shade better than most large aquarium plants. CO2: Not required; grows without injection. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 4 months; occasional liquid fertiliser with iron and trace elements. Planting: Background specimen; plant singly with ample space; keep crown exposed above substrate. Growth: Slow; reaches 30–60 cm over many months; minimal runner production.
