Cryptocoryne versteegii
Also known as: New Guinea Crypt, Versteegii Crypt
Origin: New Guinea
Cryptocoryne versteegii is an unusual species from New Guinea — notably outside the main Cryptocoryne distribution range concentrated in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It produces elongated, lanceolate leaves in a rich green, with reddish tinting emerging under brighter lighting conditions. The plant grows at a moderate pace and requires soft, slightly acidic water conditions for best results. It is rarely encountered in the hobby, making it a genuine find for Cryptocoryne collectors and enthusiasts interested in exploring the outer ranges of the genus. In the aquarium, it performs best in a stable, established planted tank away from strong currents.
Light: Moderate; some red tinting develops under stronger light. CO2: Optional; benefits from CO2 in higher-tech setups. Fertilisation: Moderate feeding with balanced liquid fertiliser; root tabs beneficial. Placement: Midground to background in medium or large aquariums. Propagation: Runners from rhizome; separate once daughter plants are firmly rooted.
