Cryptocoryne villosa
Also known as: Hairy Crypt, Villosa Crypt, Borneo Hairy Crypt
Origin: Borneo
Cryptocoryne villosa is one of the most morphologically distinctive species in the genus. Native to Borneo, it is characterised by clearly visible trichomes (hairs) on the leaf blade surfaces — a trait virtually unique among aquatic Cryptocoryne. Its leaves are of moderate size and broadly lanceolate in shape, displayed on medium-length petioles. In the aquarium it requires soft, warm, slightly acidic water and stable conditions. Crypt melt upon introduction is possible. Once established, the plant grows steadily and its extraordinary surface texture becomes a genuine talking point in any collection. A must-have for serious Cryptocoryne collectors.
Light: Low to moderate; sensitive to strong light — forest floor conditions preferred. CO2: Not required; stable low-tech conditions suit this rare species well. Fertilisation: Moderate nutrition via root tabs; avoid over-fertilisation. Placement: Midground in a specialist or collector tank; stable, undisturbed position preferred. Propagation: Slow runner production; handle with great care to avoid stressing the plant.
