Cryptocoryne wendtii
Also known as: Brown Wendtii, Wendtii Brown, Brown Crypt
Origin: Sri Lanka
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown' is native to Sri Lanka and represents the archetypal brown-leafed Crypt that has delighted aquarists for decades. Its broad, hammered-textured leaves range from warm chocolate-brown to coppery-bronze, providing a distinctive earthy warmth that complements both Asian and South American biotope aquascapes. It is one of the hardiest and most forgiving aquatic plants available, tolerating low light, hard or soft water, and even periods of neglect, yet rewarding good husbandry with vigorous, clumping growth.
Light: Low to medium; brown colouration deepens and broadens under medium light. CO2: Not required; thrives in low-tech tanks with no supplementation. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs; adapts to most substrate types. Planting: Expose crown; plant in groups of 3–5 spaced 10 cm apart for a lush clump. Growth: Slow; spreads via runners — a well-established group can fill the midground beautifully.
