Cryptocoryne wendtii
Also known as: Wendtii Green Crypt, Green Wendtii, Cryptocoryne wendtii Green
Origin: South Asia (Sri Lanka)

Cryptocoryne wendtii Green is the bright, green-leaved variant of the popular wendtii species from Sri Lanka. It produces lance-shaped, moderately wavy leaves in rich green tones that remain consistently fresh-looking across a wide range of light levels. Under low light the leaves are broader and more horizontal; under stronger illumination they become slightly more upright and compact, with a subtle sheen on the upper surface. Like all wendtii forms, this variety grows as a rosette from a rhizome and spreads naturally by sending out horizontal runners from which new daughter plants emerge. This clumping, spreading behavior makes Cryptocoryne wendtii Green ideal for establishing natural-looking foreground and midground plantings that gradually fill available space. It is one of the most forgiving and recommended plants for beginners entering the planted aquarium hobby. The green form is particularly valued in low-tech community tanks where its soft, natural color complements a wide variety of fish and the absence of demanding care allows hobbyists to focus on their livestock. It draws nutrients primarily from the substrate, making root tab supplementation the most effective fertilization strategy. Crypt melt — the temporary dissolution of leaves after introduction — is a normal adaptation response and not indicative of plant failure. Recovery is predictable within 2–4 weeks. Once established, this crypt is exceptionally resilient and long-lived.
Planting Plant the rhizome in substrate with the growing tip exposed above the surface. Suitable for sand, gravel, or specialized plant substrate. Root tabs placed 2–3 cm beneath the planting site greatly improve growth in inert substrates.
Lighting Very low to moderate light (10–30 µmol/m²/s PAR) is ideal. The green form retains its fresh color tone across a wide lighting range. Strong direct light may cause algae on leaf surfaces.
CO2 and Fertilization No CO2 injection required. Root tabs every 3–6 months provide consistent nutrition. Liquid fertilizer can supplement column nutrients, especially for trace elements.
Water Conditions Maintain pH 5.5–8.0 and temperature 20–28°C. Tolerates a wide range of hardness and community tank conditions. Excellent for general tropical community setups.
Crypt Melt Management Expect possible leaf melt after planting in a new tank. Remove deteriorating leaves at the base to prevent water quality issues. New growth returns within 2–4 weeks.
Propagation Separate daughter plants from runners once they develop several leaves. Re-plant separately at the same depth.
Common Issues Crypt melt is temporary and expected. Yellowing under long-term growth indicates nutrient depletion — replace root tabs. Overgrowth of runners may require periodic thinning.
