Cryptocoryne wendtii
Also known as: Red Wendtii, Wendtii Red, Red Crypt
Origin: Sri Lanka
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Red' produces some of the most richly coloured leaves of any Cryptocoryne, ranging from deep reddish-brown to full burgundy under stronger light, with the characteristic broad, corrugated texture shared by all wendtii varieties. Like its green and brown siblings it is exceptionally hardy and forgiving, adapting to a wide range of aquarium conditions. Its warm colouration makes it a popular choice for creating depth and contrast in Nature Aquarium layouts and community planted tanks.
Light: Low to medium; red colouration intensifies significantly under medium light. CO2: Not required; CO2 addition enhances red pigmentation. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs; iron supplementation deepens red tones. Planting: Expose crown; group plant in mid-foreground to foreground for best colour impact. Growth: Slow; very reliable — among the easiest red-toned plants for low-tech tanks.
