Cryptocoryne yujii
Also known as: Yujii Crypt, Sasaki's Crypt
Origin: Borneo
Cryptocoryne yujii is among the most recently described and rarest Cryptocoryne species in cultivation. It was named in honour of Dr. Yuji Sasaki, a pioneering Japanese researcher who devoted decades to studying the genus. Endemic to Borneo, it produces narrow, elongated leaves with a characteristic hammered texture in dark, rich green. In the aquarium, it is slow-growing and demands stable, soft, slightly acidic water conditions. Disturbance should be minimised once it is established. Its extreme rarity in cultivation means that finding and keeping this plant successfully is a mark of distinction among Cryptocoryne specialists. Treat it with the care its status deserves.
Light: Low; shade conditions preferred; replicate the dim forest stream habitat. CO2: Not required; keep water chemistry stable — that matters more than CO2 here. Fertilisation: Light root tab feeding; avoid excess nutrients that may promote algae. Placement: Foreground to midground in a dedicated crypt or collector tank. Propagation: Extremely slow via runners; do not rush division.
