Cryptocoryne zukalii
Also known as: Zukal's Crypt, Zukalii Crypt
Origin: Thailand
Cryptocoryne zukalii is native to Thailand and is named in honour of the botanist Zukal who contributed to the study of the genus. It is a compact species with short, oval to spatulate dark green leaves displaying a fine, granular surface texture and a somewhat glossy finish. It remains small and unobtrusive, making it ideal for nano aquariums and for use in the foreground to midground of larger layouts. Moderately rare in the hobby, it is a satisfying species for collectors seeking a well-behaved, attractive novelty Crypt.
Light: Low to medium; compact habit maintained across a range of light levels. CO2: Not required; grows in basic low-tech conditions without supplementation. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs; peat addition helpful in hard water areas. Planting: Expose crown; well suited to planting in groups of 3–5 in the foreground. Growth: Slow; very well-behaved — does not spread aggressively; easy to control.
