Cyperus helferi
Also known as: Helferi Papyrus, Helferi Sedge, Thailand Cyperus
Origin: Thailand
Cyperus helferi is unique among Cyperus species in that it can thrive fully submerged as well as emergent, making it genuinely aquarium-suitable unlike most of its relatives. Native to the rivers of Thailand, it produces slender, arching leaves from a rosette base, reaching 20–40 cm tall. The leaves are narrow and ribbon-like with a gentle curve, creating a distinctive natural grace when planted in groups. It performs best with moderate light and benefits from CO2 supplementation and nutrient-rich substrate.
Light: Medium (35–55 PAR); maintains good growth under standard tropical aquarium lighting. CO2: Beneficial; injection promotes stronger, more upright leaf development. Planting: Plant the rhizome base in nutrient-rich substrate; position in the background or corner for best effect. Maintenance: Remove old or damaged leaves at the base; divide large clumps when they become crowded. Note: One of very few Cyperus species that thrive fully submerged — do not confuse with marginal-only Cyperus that will decline underwater.
