Cyperus helferi
Also known as: Helferi Sedge Potted, Thai Sedge
Origin: Thailand
This potted specimen of Cyperus helferi provides an immediately plantable, well-rooted plant that can be placed directly into the aquarium background for instant effect. Unlike bulb or bare-root formats, the potted format means the plant is already actively growing and will continue to grow without any re-establishment lag, making it the most convenient way to add this graceful grass-like species to a high-tech planted aquarium.
C. helferi is one of very few Cyperus species that can be grown fully submerged in the aquarium, producing long, arching, bright-green, grass-like leaves from a compact central rosette. It is a moderately demanding plant that benefits from CO2 injection and medium to high light, but rewards these conditions with a beautifully serene, natural stream aesthetic unlike any other aquarium plant.
In the aquascape, C. helferi is most effective planted in groups of three to five rosettes in the background or midground, where its arching leaves provide flowing movement and textural variety against harder-leaved neighbours such as Anubias, Bolbitis, or Cryptocoryne.
Light: Medium to high; bright light keeps the arching leaves compact and a rich fresh green colour. CO2: Recommended; CO2 at 15–25 mg/l significantly improves growth and leaf quality. Fertilisation: Rich substrate; weekly comprehensive liquid fertiliser dosing during active growth. Placement: Background or midground accent; plant in groups of 3–5 for maximum visual impact. Propagation: Side shoots at the base can be detached with roots intact and replanted independently.
