Cyperus involucratus
Also known as: Green Flats Sedge, Flat Sedge, Umbrella Flats
Origin: Africa / Madagascar
Cyperus involucratus is closely related to C. alternifolius and is sometimes sold under that name, but it is distinguished by its broader, flatter, and stiffer bracts that radiate horizontally from the stem apex rather than drooping as in C. alternifolius. This gives it a slightly more rigid, architectural quality. It is native to Africa and Madagascar and is naturalised in many warm regions worldwide.
In cultivation it is one of the most tolerant and easy-to-grow marginal aquatic plants available. It thrives in ponds, water bowls, paludariums, and any situation where the root zone is permanently wet or submerged. It tolerates mild frost and can be grown outdoors year-round in mild temperate climates.
Its robust, dense growth habit and broad bracts create excellent cover and perching sites for frogs, fish, and invertebrates in paludarium setups, and its architectural form is a natural companion to papyrus, Saururus, and other water-margin plants in large display setups.
Light: Medium to high; grows in both shade and full sun but produces the sturdiest, most upright stems in bright conditions. CO2: Not required; emergent growth uses atmospheric carbon. Fertilisation: Aquatic fertiliser tabs every 8 weeks; responds well to balanced nutrition in moist substrate. Placement: Marginal pond shelf at 0–15 cm depth or in waterlogged container; stems grow into open air. Propagation: Divide clumps at the rhizome base; stem-tip propagation in water also works reliably.
