Cyperus papyrus
Also known as: Dwarf Papyrus, Papyrus Sedge, Paper Reed
Origin: Africa
Cyperus papyrus is the ancient Egyptian Papyrus — the plant from whose stems the earliest paper was made — and 'Dwarf Papyrus' refers to cultivated compact forms of this species that remain manageable in garden water features and paludariums. The distinctive feathery flower heads consist of numerous hair-thin, drooping rays radiating from the stem tip in a spherical brush-like umbel, creating an iconic silhouette that is instantly recognisable.
In paludarium and marginal pond settings, Dwarf Papyrus thrives in warm, shallow water or very wet substrate, with stems growing upward into the open air. It is fast-growing and robust, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and performing well in both full sun and bright indoor lighting. It provides exceptional vertical structure and a dramatic tropical aesthetic.
For aquarists with open-top setups or large paludariums, Dwarf Papyrus is an excellent emergent accent. Its clumping growth habit and tendency to self-propagate by rooting arching stems make it easy to expand and share.
Light: High; outdoor sun or very bright indoor light is required for dense, upright stem growth. CO2: Not required; an emergent species accessing atmospheric CO2 above the water surface. Fertilisation: Rich aquatic substrate or slow-release marginal fertiliser tabs every 8–10 weeks. Placement: Marginal position with roots in water or waterlogged soil and stems in open air; pond shelf at 0–10 cm depth. Propagation: Divide rhizomes at the base; stem tips placed upside-down in water will root and produce new plantlets.
