Cryptocoryne lutea
Also known as: Cryptocoryne Lutea, Lutea Crypt
Origin: Sri Lanka

Cryptocoryne lutea is a compact Cryptocoryne species native to Sri Lanka, where it grows in shallow, fast-flowing streams and rivers with clear, moderately hard water. In the aquarium, it forms tidy rosettes of oval to lanceolate leaves with a distinctive bullate (puckered) surface texture in shades of olive-green to yellow-green with occasional brown-red undertones under stronger light.
Cryptocoryne lutea is more compact than C. wendtii, typically staying under 10–12 cm in height, making it excellent for midground placement in smaller aquariums or as a foreground plant in larger setups. Like all Crypts, it is hardy once established, tolerates low light without CO2, and is a reliable root feeder that benefits from nutrient-rich substrate.
The 'Dennerle' branding indicates this plant is grown and supplied by Dennerle, a German aquatic plant specialist known for high-quality, algae-free aquatic plants. Their tissue culture varieties (in vitro) are particularly clean and suitable for shrimp tanks.
Cryptocoryne lutea spreads slowly by runners and gradually forms attractive clusters. It may experience 'Crypt melt' after transplanting — a natural phenomenon where leaves die back temporarily before the plant regrows adapted to new conditions.
Light: Low to medium light (5–30 PAR). Grows well in shaded or low-light aquariums. More light enhances color slightly.
CO2: Not required. Grows without CO2 in low-tech setups.
Substrate: Root-feeder that benefits from root tabs or rich aqua soil. Place root tabs near established plants for best growth.
Crypt Melt: Temporary leaf die-back is normal after transplanting. Leave the plant in place — the root system is alive and will produce new leaves within 2–4 weeks.
Placement: Midground plant in small to medium aquariums. Effective in groups of 3–5 plants.
Maintenance: Low. Remove yellowed or melted leaves. Divide runners when the cluster becomes too dense.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 20–28°C. Adaptable to a wide range of water chemistry.
