Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis'
Also known as: Giant Hygrophila, Siamensis Hygro, Temple Plant
Origin: South-East Asia (Thailand, Malaysia)
Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis' is a large, robust stem plant from Southeast Asia, widely grown for its hardiness, fast growth, and easy maintenance. In the aquarium, it produces broad, lance-shaped to oblong leaves in rich medium-green, arranged in opposite pairs along thick stems. Under strong light the leaves may develop reddish-purple undersides.
This is one of the most reliable background plants for community aquariums and low-tech planted setups. It grows vigorously under a wide range of light levels without requiring CO2, making it ideal for beginners who want lush green coverage without the complexity of a pressurized CO2 system. Its rapid growth helps outcompete algae in new setups by consuming excess nutrients.
Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis' is a large plant suited to medium-to-large aquariums where it can grow tall without dominating the aquascape visually. Regular trimming and replanting of tops creates bushy, multi-stemmed groupings. The plant accepts nutrient-poor substrate, though liquid fertilization and root tabs improve performance.
This Dennerle-supplied variety may be slightly more compact and better suited to aquarium conditions than wild-type material.
Light: Low to high light (10–80+ PAR). Extremely adaptable — one of the most light-tolerant stem plants. Grows in virtually any light condition.
CO2: Not required. Grows well without CO2, though CO2 increases growth rate significantly.
Substrate: Grows in most substrates. Benefits from root tabs or nutrient-rich soil for long-term health.
Placement: Background plant only (large and fast-growing). Plant in groups of 5–10 stems in the back third of the aquarium. Trim weekly in good conditions.
Maintenance: Regular trimming is necessary. Cut tops and replant for bushier appearance. Remove bare lower stems periodically.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 20–30°C. Extremely adaptable to all standard aquarium conditions.
