About

Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' (often labeled 'Monte Carlo Belem' by Dennerle based on origin locality) is a small, creeping stem plant from Argentina that has become one of the most popular foreground carpeting plants in the aquascaping hobby. It features small, round, bright green leaves on compact, creeping stems that spread horizontally along the substrate, forming a lush, vivid green carpet.

Compared to Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba' (HC Cuba), Monte Carlo is significantly more forgiving and accessible: it carpets well under medium light and can be established with minimal CO2 (though CO2 significantly improves the result), and it is less prone to melting or failing during the initial establishment phase. This makes it the preferred carpet plant recommendation for intermediate aquarists who want a real carpet without the strict demands of HC Cuba.

Monte Carlo grows in a creeping manner, spreading outward from planting points along the substrate surface. Under strong light and CO2, it forms a dense, emerald-green carpet within 4–6 weeks. Without CO2 in moderate light, establishment takes longer but is achievable.

Dennerle produces Monte Carlo as a tissue culture (in vitro), providing a clean, algae-free, snail-free product ideal for new aquascape setups.

Care Guide

Light: Medium to high light (20–60+ PAR). Can carpet under medium light — much more forgiving than HC Cuba. CO2 greatly improves speed and density.

CO2: Optional but strongly recommended (15–25 mg/L). Can carpet without CO2 in medium light conditions, though more slowly.

Substrate: Rich aqua soil provides best results. In sand or gravel, use root tabs and more liquid fertilization.

Planting: Plant small clumps 2–3 cm apart in the foreground. Press gently into substrate. Trim long floating stems that haven't anchored.

Propagation: Spreads naturally by runners. New portions can be trimmed and replanted elsewhere.

Maintenance: Trim regularly (every 3–4 weeks) to maintain compact carpet. Raise scissors above substrate level; don't cut all the way to the substrate or the carpet will thin.

Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–28°C.
