Sagittaria subulata
Also known as: Dwarf Sagittaria, Narrow-leaved Arrowhead, Awl-leaf Arrowhead
Origin: North and South America

Sagittaria subulata, Dwarf Sagittaria or Narrow-Leaf Arrowhead, is a North American native aquatic plant found in coastal brackish habitats and freshwater streams from the eastern United States to South America. In the aquarium, the submerged form produces narrow, ribbon-like leaves of vivid green that grow to varying heights depending on light intensity — in high light they stay short (5–10 cm), while in lower light they can grow to 30+ cm.
Dwarf Sagittaria is one of the most practical foreground to midground plants for aquarists at all levels. It grows vigorously without CO2 in most substrate types, tolerates a wide range of water chemistry including slightly brackish conditions, and spreads by runners that gradually create dense, natural-looking grass patches.
The plant is an effective natural grass substitute for beginners who cannot maintain the demanding conditions required by HC Cuba or Eleocharis. While it doesn't produce the perfectly uniform lawn of true hairgrass species, its natural variability in leaf length creates a more realistic, wild-meadow appearance.
Dennerle produces high-quality Sagittaria subulata plants from their aquatic plant cultivation program.
Light: Low to medium-high light (10–50 PAR). Height is inversely related to light intensity — strong light keeps the plant compact; low light produces taller growth.
CO2: Not required. Grows well in low-tech setups without CO2.
Substrate: Tolerates most substrates. Root tabs or nutrient-rich soil support denser, faster spreading.
Placement: Foreground to midground. Spreads by runners — allow space for expansion or trim runners to control.
Propagation: Abundant runner production creates daughter plants. Remove and replant or allow to spread freely.
Maintenance: Low. Trim overly long leaves for a tidier appearance. Control runners to prevent the plant from taking over the aquascape.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 18–28°C. Tolerates even slightly brackish conditions.
