Didiplis diandra
Also known as: Water Hedge, Didiplis
Origin: North America
Didiplis diandra is native to the southeastern United States and is found growing submerged in clear, shallow streams and pond margins. In aquariums it is prized for its very small, opposite leaves that develop attractive orange to red colouration under high light and iron supplementation. The plant grows compactly with short internodes when conditions are optimal, making it ideal for midground use. It requires good light and CO2 to thrive and is considered moderately challenging due to its sensitivity to nutrient deficiencies.
Light: High (60–90 PAR); essential for orange-red colouration; stays green in low light. CO2: Required at 20–30 mg/L; without CO2 internodes elongate and colour is poor. Fertiliser: Elevated iron and micronutrients; balanced NPK essential; sensitive to deficiencies. Planting: Midground groups of 5–7 stems spaced 2 cm; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Moderate; 10–25 cm; compact and dense under good conditions.
