Eleocharis acicularis
Origin: Cosmopolitan
Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis acicularis) is one of the most popular carpeting plants in the aquascaping hobby, producing dense mats of fine, grass-like blades that create a natural lawn effect. Under sufficient light and CO2 injection it spreads rapidly across the substrate via horizontal runners. A staple of Nature Aquarium and iwagumi layouts and widely available in Belgian and Dutch aquascaping shops.
Plant individual portions densely (1–2 cm apart) in nutrient-rich substrate. Requires at least medium-high lighting for carpet formation — insufficient light causes thin, leggy upward growth. CO2 injection significantly accelerates spreading. Trim with aquascaping scissors to maintain low, dense carpet height. Combine with root tabs for long-term nutrient supply.
