Echinodorus amazonicus
Also known as: Narrow-leaf Amazon Sword, Amazon Sword
Origin: South America
Echinodorus amazonicus originates from the river margins of Brazil, where it grows submerged in moderate currents with its long, narrow leaves streaming in the flow. In aquariums it forms a rosette of upright, bright-green leaves that are narrower and more pointed than E. bleheri, typically reaching 30–50 cm. It is equally robust and undemanding, making it ideal for beginners who want a slightly more refined sword plant silhouette. It propagates readily by producing daughter plants on long flower stalks.
Light: Medium (30–50 PAR); tolerates lower light with reduced growth rate. CO2: Not required; benefits modestly from supplementation. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 3 months; weekly liquid fertiliser covering iron and trace elements. Planting: Anchor in the background; keep crown exposed; plant singly or in small groups of 3 spaced 15 cm apart. Growth: Reaches 30–50 cm; propagates via runners — sever daughter plants once they develop their own roots.
