Echinodorus bolivianus

Echinodorus bolivianus is a diminutive species native to Bolivia and neighbouring South American countries, where it colonises the margins and shallows of slow-moving tropical waterways. In the aquarium it forms tight rosettes of narrow, pointed, bright-green leaves that remain below 15 cm and spread readily through horizontal runners, making it ideal for foreground carpeting. It is slightly smaller and more compact than E. quadricostatus, particularly well suited to nano tanks and smaller planted setups.

This species adapts to a very wide range of water conditions and is remarkably tolerant of temperature fluctuations, performing well from 18°C to 28°C. It requires no CO2 injection to thrive and is forgiving of inconsistent fertilisation, making it one of the most beginner-friendly foreground plants available. Under strong light it stays dense and short; in lower light it stretches modestly.

E. bolivianus is frequently mislabelled in the trade, sometimes sold as E. tenellus or vice versa, but its slightly broader leaves and more compact runner network distinguish it. It is an excellent foundation plant for planted nanos and community tanks.

Light: Medium (30–55 PAR); compact and vigorous under higher light. CO2: Not required; supplementation greatly accelerates carpet formation. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; weekly liquid fertiliser with iron and trace minerals. Placement: Foreground; plant 4–6 cm apart; runners knit together to form a continuous carpet. Propagation: Runners continuously produce daughter plants — trim as needed to prevent overgrowth.
