Echinodorus cordifolius
Also known as: Spade Leaf Sword, Radicans Sword, Creeping Burhead
Origin: North/Central America
Echinodorus cordifolius 'Spade Leaf' is a selected form of the Spade Leaf or Radicans Sword, native to North and Central America from Mexico through the southeastern United States. It is distinguished by large, clearly heart-shaped submerged leaves with strongly defined midribs and lateral veins that give the foliage a ribbed, sculptural quality. The plant forms a large rosette reaching 30–55 cm with a bold, structured presence ideal for spacious background planting.
Like the species, 'Spade Leaf' is tolerant of a wide temperature range including cooler subtropical conditions, adapting to both soft and moderately hard water. It is an aggressive root feeder and will deplete nutrient-poor substrates quickly; consistent fertilisation is key to maintaining the quality of new leaf growth.
This variant is particularly well suited to North American or Central American biotope aquariums, where its native-range origin adds authenticity to the layout. It can also be grown paludarium-style, eventually sending up emersed leaves and white flowers above the waterline.
Light: Medium (35–65 PAR); variegation in emersed leaves intensifies under brighter light. CO2: Not required; CO2 injection improves leaf size and colour saturation. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; liquid all-in-one fertiliser weekly. Placement: Solitary specimen in the background; keep crown exposed; leave at least 20 cm clearance around it. Propagation: Adventitious plantlets form on flower stalks — detach once self-rooting, or allow to self-root in substrate.
