Echinodorus grisebachii

Echinodorus grisebachii is a widespread and variable species distributed across Central and South America, where it inhabits shallow margins of rivers, streams, and seasonally flooded savannas. In aquariums it stays compact — typically 10–30 cm — and spreads prolifically via horizontal runners, gradually forming dense green colonies across the substrate. It is sometimes sold as the 'Small Amazon Sword' or 'Chain Sword' and is valued for its grass-like texture and effortless propagation.

The species is tolerant of a broad range of conditions and adapts readily to both soft-water and hard-water setups. Under stronger lighting it stays shorter and denser; in lower light it stretches taller in search of photons but remains healthy. It is one of the few rosette plants genuinely suitable for carpeting in larger tanks without CO2 injection.

Its compact habit makes it compatible with smaller cichlids and other fish that would uproot larger swords, and its dense runner network provides valuable ground-level cover for bottom-dwelling species such as corydoras and small loaches.

Light: Medium (30–50 PAR); lower light produces taller, looser growth; higher light gives shorter, denser carpet. CO2: Not required; CO2 injection accelerates spread but is not necessary. Fertilisation: Root tabs placed between colonies every 3 months; liquid fertiliser weekly for trace elements and iron. Placement: Plant starter rosettes 5–8 cm apart in foreground or midground; runners will fill gaps over several weeks. Propagation: Severs runners between daughter plants once each has developed 4+ leaves and a healthy root system.
