Echinodorus × barthii
Also known as: Green Ozelot Sword, Ozelot Green
Origin: Cultivar
Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' is a variant of the popular Ozelot cultivar selected for its purely green base leaf colour, retaining the characteristic brown-to-dark-green spotting and blotching of the original but without any reddish or olive-brown tint to the background leaf tissue. The result is a cleaner, brighter-looking spotted sword plant with a fresher green appearance that integrates naturally into layouts built around cooler green and blue colour palettes.
It shares the same ease of culture and undemanding nature as the original Ozelot — growing readily under medium light without CO2 injection, producing daughter plants on flower stalks, and tolerating a wide range of tropical water parameters. Mature plants reach 25–40 cm, suiting midground placement in tanks of 80 litres and above.
Green Ozelot is a useful alternative for aquarists who admire the patterned leaf aesthetic of the classic Ozelot but find the reddish-brown tones clash with their livestock or other plant choices.
Light: Medium (35–65 PAR); higher light produces denser, more vivid spotting. CO2: Not required; optional and modestly beneficial. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; weekly liquid iron to maintain spot clarity. Placement: Midground to background; solitary or paired; crown must stay above substrate. Propagation: Sever daughter plants from flower stalks once roots are developed.
