Echinodorus portoalegrensis
Also known as: Porto Alegre Sword, Dwarf Sword
Origin: South America
Echinodorus portoalegrensis is native to the cooler river systems around Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, where water temperatures can drop to near 15°C seasonally. This makes it uniquely suited to subtropical aquariums housing goldfish, white cloud minnows, or other cool-water species. It stays compact at 15–25 cm, with broad, rounded, dark-green leaves on short petioles that form a dense, tidy rosette. It is slow-growing and undemanding, requiring minimal intervention to maintain its attractive form.
Light: Medium (25–50 PAR); thrives under standard aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; grows slowly but steadily without supplementation. Fertiliser: Root tabs every 4 months; a minimal liquid fertiliser monthly is sufficient. Planting: Midground or background in smaller tanks; expose crown; suits cooler water (15–24°C). Growth: Slow-growing, reaching only 15–25 cm; ideal for tanks 40 L and above.
