Echinodorus scaber
Also known as: Rough Sword, Scaber Sword
Origin: South America
Echinodorus scaber is a moderately sized Brazilian species whose species name — scaber, meaning rough — refers to the slightly rough, granular surface texture of its lance-shaped leaves. This texture is subtle but visible under close inspection and gives the plant a character distinct from the smooth-leaved majority of Echinodorus. The leaves are mid-to-dark green with prominent venation, forming a neat upright rosette of 25–40 cm.
It is an adaptable and undemanding species tolerant of a wide range of tropical water parameters and light levels. As a root feeder it benefits from substrate nutrition or root tabs, but is less voracious than the largest Echinodorus and adapts reasonably well even to modest substrates. Growth is moderate and steady, producing a reliable mid-to-background plant for community aquariums.
E. scaber is rarely the centrepiece of an aquascape but serves as an excellent supporting background plant, providing natural green texture that complements both flashy cultivars and more colourful Echinodorus varieties nearby.
Light: Medium (30–55 PAR); tolerant of varying light levels. CO2: Not required; beneficial for growth rate. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; liquid fertiliser with trace minerals weekly. Placement: Background; plant singly or in groups of 2–3 spaced 15 cm apart. Propagation: Daughter plants on flower stalks — sever once roots appear and pot separately.
