Echinodorus tenellus
Also known as: Pygmy Chain Sword, Narrow-leaf Chain Sword, Dwarf Chain Sword
Origin: North/South America
Echinodorus tenellus is found across a broad range from the eastern United States through Central America and into South America, inhabiting sandy and muddy shallows of streams and ponds. In the aquarium it stays very compact — typically 5–15 cm — and spreads prolifically via runners, producing a dense, grass-like foreground carpet over time. Its narrow, bright-green leaves are fine and elegant, creating a naturalistic meadow effect that complements both Dutch and nature aquascape styles.
Despite its small size, E. tenellus is a sturdy and adaptable plant tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. It grows faster and stays shorter under higher light, while lower light results in taller, looser growth. It does not require CO2 injection but responds positively to nutrient supplementation, particularly iron, which deepens the green colour of its foliage.
The Pygmy Chain Sword is one of the few genuinely easy foreground carpeting plants for aquarists who lack pressurised CO2 systems, making it an invaluable tool for low-tech planted tanks.
Light: Medium to high (35–70 PAR); higher light keeps the carpet compact and dense. CO2: Not required; CO2 supplementation dramatically speeds up carpet establishment. Fertilisation: Root tabs placed every 15 cm throughout the foreground; liquid iron weekly. Placement: Plant starter plugs 4–6 cm apart in foreground substrate; runners will knit together within weeks. Propagation: Runners produce daughter plants continuously — trim or sever to control spread as needed.
