Echinodorus sp.
Also known as: Vesuvius Sword, Spiral Sword
Origin: Cultivar
Echinodorus 'Vesuvius' is an unusual cultivar characterised by its tightly spiralled, corkscrew-twisted leaves that create a visually dynamic texture unlike any other sword plant. Each leaf spirals continuously from base to tip, causing a natural coiling and bouncing motion under water flow that adds life and movement to the midground. The leaf colour is a clean, bright green, and the plant typically reaches 20–35 cm — a manageable size for medium tanks.
Despite its exotic appearance, 'Vesuvius' is straightforward to grow: it tolerates the same broad range of conditions as other Echinodorus, grows without CO2 injection, and spreads occasionally via short runners. It is most effective when planted among or in front of upright, smooth-leaved plants where the contrast in leaf form is maximised.
The cultivar became popular rapidly after its release due to the novelty of the spiralling leaf form, and it remains one of the most immediately recognisable and frequently photographed sword plant cultivars in planted aquarium photography and aquascaping competitions.
Light: Medium (35–60 PAR); grows well under standard community tank lighting. CO2: Not required; CO2 supplementation is beneficial but not essential. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; liquid all-in-one fertiliser weekly. Placement: Midground; works best among upright smooth-leaved plants to contrast spiral form. Propagation: Short runners and occasional flower stalks — sever daughter plants once established.
