Echinodorus sp.
Also known as: White Vesuvius Sword, Albino Vesuvius
Origin: Cultivar
Echinodorus 'White Vesuvius' is an albino or strongly variegated variant of the popular 'Vesuvius' cultivar, retaining the characteristic tightly spiralled, corkscrew leaf form but expressing it in pale cream-white to off-white colouration with minimal chlorophyll. The ghostly, luminous appearance of its spiralled leaves creates a striking contrast against green or red companion plants, giving it a unique and ethereal visual quality unlike any other common aquarium plant.
As an albino cultivar, 'White Vesuvius' has reduced photosynthetic capacity and is somewhat more sensitive than the green form. It grows more slowly and requires more careful attention to lighting — too little light causes it to fade further and decline, while strong CO2 and nutrient availability supports its reduced metabolic capacity. It is best treated as an intermediate-difficulty plant despite its Echinodorus parentage.
The plant remains a rare and sought-after cultivar that commands premium pricing. It is best used sparingly as a single specimen focal point in the midground where its unusual colour and form can be fully appreciated.
Light: Medium (40–65 PAR); cannot thrive in low light due to reduced chlorophyll. CO2: Beneficial (15–25 mg/L); helps compensate for reduced photosynthetic efficiency. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; liquid fertiliser with comprehensive micronutrients weekly. Placement: Midground focal specimen; plant singly against a green background plant for contrast. Propagation: Slow to propagate; occasional flower stalks — sever daughter plants once well established.
