Egeria densa
Origin: South America (naturalised in Europe)
Egeria densa is a robust oxygenating pondweed with dense whorls of bright green leaves that produce abundant oxygen and compete effectively with algae by absorbing nutrients from the water column. More vigorous and lush-looking than Elodea canadensis, it is widely sold in Belgian and Dutch vijver shops as a premium oxygenator. Best suited to larger ponds where its growth can be managed seasonally.
Place bunches directly into the pond — no planting required as it floats freely or can be weighted. Tolerates full sun to partial shade. Grows vigorously in nutrient-rich pond water, competing effectively with algae. Trim back in summer to prevent overgrowth. Remove excess biomass in autumn before decomposition. Note: considered invasive in some regions — do not release into natural waterways.
