Eichhornia crassipes
Also known as: Water Hyacinth, Common Water Hyacinth
Origin: South America
Eichhornia crassipes originates from the Amazon basin and has been introduced worldwide due to its vigorous growth and showy flowers. In still or slow-moving warm water it produces bulbous, air-filled leaf bases that keep the plant buoyant while its root mass creates an extensive underwater habitat. Under strong light it blooms with large, orchid-like violet flowers, making it as ornamental as it is functional. Its rapid nutrient uptake makes it one of the most effective biological water purification plants available.
Light: Very high surface light; requires direct or very bright indirect light for healthy compact growth. CO2: Not required; absorbs nutrients — especially nitrate and phosphate — directly from water. Planting: Place freely on the water surface; requires no substrate planting. Maintenance: Remove excess plants aggressively as it multiplies fast; keep only what the tank can accommodate. Note: Requires still or very calm water; high flow will damage petioles and prevent normal floating posture.
