Eleocharis acicularis
Also known as: Hairgrass, Thin Hairgrass, Needle Spikerush
Origin: Worldwide
Eleocharis acicularis is found on the margins of ponds, streams, and lakes across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, making it one of the most cosmopolitan aquatic plants in the hobby. Its thread-thin, bright-green stems emerge in dense tufts from a creeping rhizome and spread laterally to form a continuous lawn. Under medium to high light with CO2 supplementation it stays compact; in low-tech tanks the blades grow taller but still carpet effectively with patience.
Light: Medium to high (40–70 PAR) for compact growth; low light produces taller, slower-spreading carpet. CO2: Beneficial; injection speeds spreading and keeps blades short and tidy. Planting: Divide clumps into 1–2 cm plugs and plant 3–4 cm apart in fine-grained or nutrient-rich substrate. Maintenance: Trim with scissors when blades exceed desired height; thin crowded clumps to prevent rotting at the base. Note: Runner production is key — avoid disturbing the substrate once established to allow spreading.
