Eleocharis dulcis
Also known as: Chinese Water Chestnut Potted, Water Chestnut Potted
Origin: Southeast Asia
This potted Eleocharis dulcis specimen is supplied as an actively growing plant in a standard aquatic pot, ready to be placed directly at the water's edge of a paludarium, open-top aquarium, or pond feature without any establishment lag. Its bright-green, cylindrical, reed-like stems will continue growing upward immediately, providing bold vertical structure in the marginal or emergent zone of the display.
E. dulcis — Chinese Water Chestnut — is both an ornamental and edible marginal sedge widely cultivated across tropical Asia. Its upright, leafless stems reach 60–150 cm in full-sun conditions and create an authentic tropical reed-marsh aesthetic. The plant is vigorous and fast-growing in warm, full-sun conditions and requires minimal care beyond regular watering and occasional fertilisation.
For paludarium designers, open-top aquarium enthusiasts, and pond gardeners in warm climates, this potted format provides the fastest and most reliable way to establish E. dulcis as an impactful vertical accent in the emergent zone.
Light: High; full sun or bright indoor grow-light for best vertical growth. CO2: Not required; emergent stems access atmospheric CO2 directly. Fertilisation: Aquatic fertiliser tabs every 8 weeks beside the roots. Placement: Marginal zone at 5–20 cm water depth or in waterlogged substrate in open-top setup. Propagation: Corms produced at the base of established stems; harvest in autumn and replant in spring.
