Eleocharis parvula
Also known as: Dwarf Hairgrass, Eleocharis Mini, Mini Hairgrass
Origin: Cosmopolitan (cultivated form from North America/Europe)

Eleocharis parvula (and related species sold as 'Mini' or Dwarf Hairgrass) is one of the most natural-looking foreground carpeting plants available. Its delicate, hair-like stems grow 3–8 cm tall, creating dense, vivid green lawn effects that mimic natural grassy shoals and submerged meadows. Native to temperate and tropical fresh and brackish habitats across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
Dwarf Hairgrass is a popular entry-level carpet plant because it is more tolerant than HC Cuba — it grows in medium light with or without CO2, though CO2 and high light produce the best, most carpet-like results. Without CO2, the plant grows more slowly and may send up taller stems rather than carpeting densely along the substrate.
The plant spreads by runners (stolons) that grow horizontally along the substrate, producing new vertical shoots at regular intervals. Given appropriate light and nutrients, a full carpet can develop within 6–10 weeks. In nutrient-poor substrate, root tabs placed under the planting area significantly accelerate establishment.
Dwarf Hairgrass provides natural shelter for bottom-dwelling fish and invertebrates, creating an ideal naturalistic habitat.
Light: Medium to high light (20–60+ PAR). Can carpet under medium light without CO2, but CO2 and higher light greatly improve speed and density.
CO2: Optional but recommended (15–25 mg/L) for best carpet results.
Substrate: Rich aqua soil or root tabs in the foreground substrate significantly help establishment and spreading.
Planting: Separate the plant into small individual clumps of 5–10 stems. Plant clumps 2–4 cm apart in the foreground substrate. Press firmly into the substrate.
Maintenance: Trim to 3–4 cm height with aquascaping scissors to maintain a compact lawn. Regular trimming encourages lateral spreading.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 18–28°C. Tolerates slightly brackish water.
