Eleocharis montevidensis
Also known as: Giant Hairgrass, Tall Spike Rush
Origin: South America / North America
Eleocharis montevidensis is the tallest and most robust of the aquarium hairgrasses, producing thick, cylindrical green blades that can reach 30–40 cm. In tissue culture form it arrives clean and vigorous, establishing quickly in nutrient-rich substrate. Unlike the finer species, Giant Hairgrass creates a bold, reed-like meadow aesthetic best suited to medium and large aquariums where it can be planted in sweeping drifts. It tolerates a wide range of conditions and can thrive in low to high light. CO2 and fertilisation accelerate growth and improve blade colour. Regular thinning prevents the clump from becoming too dense and keeps inner blades from yellowing due to shading.
Light: Low–high (adaptable) CO2: Not required but accelerates growth Fertilisation: Macro and micro dosing; nutrient-rich substrate preferred Placement: Midground to background meadow planting Propagation: Divide established clumps; runners spread moderately
