About

Eleocharis parvula is the classic dwarf hairgrass, a slender, grass-like aquatic plant from the Cyperaceae family that creates dense, natural-looking foreground carpets in freshwater aquariums. Individual leaves grow 5 to 15 cm tall depending on light intensity, with stronger light producing shorter, denser growth. It spreads rapidly via stolons (runners) across the substrate, filling the foreground with a fine-textured green lawn that beautifully mimics natural meadow streams. A cornerstone plant for Nature Aquarium and Dutch aquarium style layouts. Benefits significantly from CO2 injection and nutrient-rich substrate, though it can survive in lower-tech tanks with reduced growth rate.

Care Guide

Plant individual portions 2–3 cm apart in fine, nutrient-rich substrate and keep under moderate to high lighting for best carpeting results. CO2 injection accelerates spreading and keeps the blades short and dense. Trim with aquascaping scissors to the desired height to maintain a neat carpet appearance. Avoid planting in coarse gravel as the shallow root system struggles to anchor. Regular fertilization with liquid micronutrients supports healthy, vibrant green coloration.
