Eleocharis pusilla
Also known as: Micro Hairgrass, Tiny Spike Rush
Origin: Australia / New Zealand
Eleocharis pusilla, known as Micro Hairgrass or Tiny Spike Rush, is the most compact member of the aquatic hairgrass group. Its tissue culture form delivers a clean, algae-free mass of minute, hair-thin blades that, once planted and established, spreads via runners into a seamless emerald carpet. The extremely fine texture pairs beautifully with coarse hardscape in minimalist Iwagumi layouts. It is moderately demanding, performing best with medium to high light and CO2 supplementation. Plant small sections 1–2 cm apart for faster coverage. The carpet stays naturally short — rarely exceeding 3 cm — and requires minimal trimming compared to larger Eleocharis species. Suitable for nano tanks from 10 litres upward.
Light: Medium–high CO2: Beneficial (recommended for dense carpet) Fertilisation: Nutrient-rich substrate; regular micro dosing Placement: Foreground carpet Propagation: Runners spread naturally; divide clumps every few months
